Welcome,
My name is Jamie Miller, and I am the Founder of Citizen of the Republic, a website dedicated to the restoration, revitalization, and realization of American democracy.
As I previously mentioned, on our last episode, Citizen of the Republic – was founded to be a moderate, independent, political voice, which invites people from across party lines to come together – to promote practical solutions over partisan politics.
But what is our methodology? What is our approach?
Well, both the blog and YouTube channel, take a two-tier, philosophical, and comparative approach, to address the issues facing our country.
Think of it like – when a patient goes to a doctor’s office – with chronic pain.
There is the immediate, top-down approach of finding the right medication to ease their suffering – but you also need to address the underlying root cause of the illness as well.
So, with respect to the philosophical approach, the content that you will see here will seek to address the root causes of the issues facing our society.
For instance, how can Aristotle’s definition of justice help us address polarization in modern America? I promise, its more interesting than its sounds.
From a comparative standpoint, and given my background as an American who has lived abroad twice in his life – let’s look at other models, or different medications, as we investigate how other countries have solved issues, like the ones we face today –
For instance, amidst the Great Resignation or Great Reshuffle, many Americans are leaving their jobs because we are tired, burnt out, overworked, underpaid, and seeking a better work-life balance for ourselves, and our families.
Ergo, if America is the only modern, industrialized nation that has no law which requires employers to provide their employees with a minimum amount of paid time off. What can we learn from other countries that have adopted a national paid leave law?
Now, before my detractors jump on the “foreign influence” bandwagon – let me say this –
America is a nation of immigrants – and what do immigrants do? They innovate!
Think about it this way, once upon a time we had no espresso machines in America!
Then, one day, someone shipped one out from Italy.
Until, nowadays, espresso is no longer a novelty. It’s the norm – and that is what you do in a marketplace of ideas.
We introduce our fellow Americans to espresso – and see if they want it.
So, with these two approaches in mind, let’s think outside the box – put our options on the table – and debate – what practical policies – can we adopt to build a healthier, happier, and safer America?
