Citizens of the Republic,
Welcome back – so why do we want paid leave? The answer seems obvious, doesn’t it?
But let’s talk about some of the social and economic benefits – and turn to a non-exhaustive list of reasons why the United States of America should adopt a law that requires employers to provide their employees with paid time off:
Paid leave, enables employees to take time off to – care for a new child, recover from illness, or care for a family member.
New parents, adoptive parents, and their children – reap the rewards of paid leave as well – for it contributes to healthy childhood development, improves maternal health, and enhances economic security.
Economically, employees with access to paid leave have been shown to have increased productivity and are more likely to remain in their jobs – as opposed to looking for a new position or dropping out of the workforce altogether.
Whilst employers, spend less time, effort, and money on recruiting, replacing, and retraining new workers.
Additionally, paid leave has been shown to boost overall labor force participation – in fact, one survey found that 38% of unemployed workers, would return to work sooner – if they had access to paid time off.
Moreover, looking to gender equality, when the pandemic broke out, nearly one in four women who left the workforce, did so – because of caregiving responsibilities.
Yet the U.S. Department of Labor estimated that if women in the United States participated in the workforce at the same rate as countries that have paid leave, it could generate an additional $500 billion worth of economic activity.
So, what are we waiting for? And what do we need? Just Two weeks.
For if our sister democracies, in Europe, and Australia, can guarantee their people 20 days of paid leave per year, how it is objectively unreasonable for hard-working Americans to ask for just ten days?
So, if you believe, as I do, that this policy matter needs to be raised in our public discourse, please like, subscribe, ring that notification bell, share with your friends – and stay tuned, for more videos on this subject.
