Citizens of the Republic,
Welcome,
My name is Jamie Miller, and I am the Founder of Citizen of the Republic, a website dedicated to the restoration, revitalization, and realization of American democracy.
So, what is the story behind this website?
Well, the short answer to that question is that I went to law school because I wanted to make a difference in the world.
The longer answer, however, is twofold.
You see, as you may be able to tell, from my hint of an accent, I have lived overseas twice in my life – and those experiences shaped my sense of America’s place, purpose – and destiny. A topic that I develop more fully, in my blog post series, “A City Upon a Hill.”
For while imperfect man, is incapable of perfect governance – and no country is without its faults and failings – in a world where authoritarian regimes are on the rise – humanity cannot afford to have 330 million Americans – give up on democracy.
Yet in order to restore our ally’s faith in us and shine as a beacon for democracy in the 21st century – we must – tend to the blight in our own garden.
Which takes us to part two – the America we live in today.
For two decades, amid two wars, two economic downturns, and an ongoing global pandemic – we have faced our fair share of calamities.
Therefore, it is no surprise, under these conditions, our country has grown increasingly despairing, bitter, and divided –
The most polarizing candidates on both the left – and the right – get the most airtime on the news, whilst a divided, gridlocked Congress, appears increasingly disconnected from the American people – for how can a group of millionaires, shielded from lost jobs, homes, and healthcare, amid the pandemic, have any drive to fix the problems facing our society?
Yet despite these challenges, as an American who loves his country, believes in the fundamental goodness of its people, and still has faith – in the value of its democratic institutions,
I believe – that all is not lost – for together, we, the American people, can solve the issues facing our society.
Towards that end, Citizen of the Republic was founded to be a moderate, independent, political voice, which invites people from across party lines to come together to promote practical solutions over partisan politics.
Now, does that mean that you and I will always agree on the “how” when it comes to the way in which we address the issues facing our nation?
No.
Yet there was a time in this country, where respectful political discourse was the norm, and not the exception.
Where inquiring minds could respectfully agree to disagree – while remembering, that at the end of the day, we all want a safe, prosperous, and free democracy.
So, let’s work together to restore, revitalize, and realize the promise of American democracy for the 21st century – and beyond.
